Author Resources

Here are a few of the links I’ve run across that authors might find helpful. If you know of a site you think I should add, email me or post it in the comments below.

Looking for an author-friendly newsletter program?

I did a lot of research on which newsletter program would best suit an author’s needs. YahooGroups is too limiting. Constant Contact and aWebber cost more than I wanted to spend and had a few drawbacks. Then I found MadMimi, and love it. It does everything I want and is really easy to use.

Mad Mimi Email Marketing is a user-friendly newsletter program recommended for authors

For authors who are republishing their out-of-print books.

Need a book scanned?

  • Pam Headrick with A Thirsty Mind offers scanning, cleaning, formatting, and converting the Word .doc to .epub and Kindle. Her email: athirstymind@sbcglobal.net. You can have her do any one or all of those services.
  • SB Virtual Assistant Services will scan your physical book and convert it to MS Word or OpenOffice. Seneca also “cleans the file” meaning she looks for and corrects scanning glitches before sending the file.

Need a file formated for Kindle, Nook, and Smashwords?

  • After some failed attempts to format my own ebooks, I now use Pam Headrick with A Thirsty Mind. She’s fabulous! Here’s her email address: format@athirstymind.com
  • eBookPrep.com will also do everything: scan your print book, clean the file, format your ebook, and upload it.

Getting Your eBook in Online Bookstores

  • For Amazon Kindle upload directly to Amazon through their digital platform, Kindle Direct Publishing.
  • For BN.com, you have two choices. Upload directly through PubIt.com or have Smashwords distribute a Nook version for you to B&N.
  • For everything else, you’ll want to upload to Smashwords.com and have them distribute to all the ebook outlets except for Amazon (which they don’t do), and B&N (if you opt out and go with PubIt). They distribute to Sony, Apple’s iBookstore, Kobo, and more.

Need a stock photos to design your own cover?

  • Big Stock has an amazing wealth of photos at really affordable prices.
  • RomanceNovelCovers.com has great photos specifically geared for romance novels.
  • iStockPhoto same as Big Stock, large inventory at affordable prices, but read their terms of use carefully.
  • Stock.xchange let’s you search multiple sites at once.

  2. Thanks Dara. I’m still researching and learning. For my first ebook experience I’m leaning toward Smashwords, but haven’t decided for sure.

Thanks so much for this information! I’ve been looking at some OOP books and thinking: I should do something with these. Now–when I finally rouse myself to act–I know where to go. Again, thanks Julie. :-)

  4. Your welcome. I think it’s going to help all of us to have all this information in one place.

  5. Great job, Julie! I know many Ninc members are going to find this a valuable resource. If I can help in any way, let me know.
